Star Anise

Star anise is native to southeast Asia and is well known for its distinct flavor and aroma characteristics. However, the Japanese star anise, commonly used in incense, is a different non-edible variety. The aroma of star anise is reminiscent of aniseed and licorice but these spices are all from different plants. Star anise has a sweet-spicy aroma that is excellent at masking unpleasant smells.
