Agarwood is the most expensive wood in the world and has been prized for its rich aroma since antiquity. The tree is not naturally fragrant but areas of older trees that are attacked by a fungus develop a uniquely sweet aroma. It is a natural process that has never been mastered by man. The deeply rich, sweet-woody aroma varies from source to source and determines the grade of the wood. The tree is native to north India and parts of China but some of the finest wood currently comes from Vietnam. The Arabs call it 'oud' and the Japanese called it 'jinkoh'. Both used it for incense burning. The highest quality Japanese jinkoh is called 'kyara'. |
